Ignite: Power Up Recap — All 5 Skills in One Place

Welcome to the Ignite: Power Up recap, our ultimate frisbee training series breaking down the movement skills, physical qualities, and training habits that help ultimate players perform with more confidence, control, and consistency on the field.

All five parts are now live, so we've put the whole series in one place: a quick look at each skill, a link to the full breakdown, and the drill video for each one.

Powered by Haddock Sports Performance

Every part of the series was built with Haddock Sport Performance. Led by Mike Haddock, a former national-level ultimate player and now an international Strength and Conditioning Coach with over a decade of experience at the highest levels of our sport, this approach focuses on building skills and movement patterns that become second nature on the field.

The 5 Skills of Ignite: Power Up

Part 1: Backhand Breaks from the Ground Up

Most players can throw a backhand break in warmups. Doing it under pressure is a different story, and the fix isn't a stronger arm. Part 1 shows how break power starts in the legs and travels up the body, and why so much of the throw actually happens on one leg.

Part 2: Layout Safety, Control in Chaos

Laying out is one of the most exciting plays in ultimate, and one of the riskiest for your body. Part 2 is about attacking the disc with full confidence while protecting yourself in those high-risk moments, so you can keep bidding all season long.

Part 3: First Step Acceleration

The first few steps decide a lot of points. On offense, they create separation. On defense, they close the gap faster than your matchup expects. Part 3 breaks down the strength, power, and control behind that explosive start.

Part 4: Flick Hucks & Controlled Power

A big flick huck is only useful if it lands where you want it. Part 4 focuses on building the power to send it deep without giving up control of the throw.

Part 5: Sky Battles

Winning in the air isn't just about height. Part 5 shows how to turn approach speed into lift, win contested discs, and land safely when you come back down. Three exercises carry it: the Triple Broad Jump, the Approach Single-Leg Box Jump, and the Jump and Stick.

The Common Thread

From the first throw to the last sky, one idea runs through every part of this series: the plays that decide games are built in training, long before game day. Strength, power, and control have to become habits, so that in the moment you're thinking about the disc, not your feet.

"Movement mastery is essentially the ability to move correctly unconsciously."
